The maximum with of a fabric bolt is 112cm, with selvedges each side, reducing the usable space to approximately 110cm. The selvedge is simply the finishing of the fabric so that it doesn’t fray at the edges. They can be sewn into your seam allowance so it doesn’t have to be wasted.

FABRIC MEASUREMENT GUIDE
1 Fat Quarter (50cm x 55cm) |
2 Fat Quarters (or 1/2 a metre) A fat quarter is a traditional measure of fabric used by quilters. Essentially, it’s a quarter of a metre of fabric, cut in a particular way. It measures approximately 50cm x 55cm. By special request we do offer ‘thin quarters’ which is the same surface area of fabric, cut as a long thin piece from the bolt. Contact us if you’d like more information, or to request your fabric is cut in this way. |
3 Fat Quarters (or 3/4 of a metre) If you order multiple pieces of the same fabric, for example two half metres, they will always be sent as one piece. You’ll get one metre of fabric. If you order three fat quarters, we’ll combine the surface area to give you a 75cm cut from the bolt (see illustration). And, if you order three metres this will, of course, come as one piece! |
4 Fat Quarters (or 1 metre) If you have any queries regarding the measurement of fabric please get in touch. Please note that this guide applies to all fabrics unless stated in the product description. emmasfabricstudio.co.uk |
How quickly do you despatch my order?
Despatch is normally within a maximum of 2 working days, but at the moment, we have extended this to 3-4 working days.
We despatch your order as quickly as possible, to ensure you get your hands on that lovely fabric ASAP. Please bear in mind your fabric takes time to prepare, it is ironed and neatly packaged for you. You will receive a confirmation of despatch email as soon as we make the trip to the Post Office. Please check your ‘junk mail’ folder in case the email is in there.
What method do you use?
We use Royal Mail services on most orders. Our standard option is second class and takes 2 - 5 working days to reach its destination. You have the option of upgrading to first class. For large and heavy orders, we tend to use a courier service.
The website is set up to weigh the fabric in your cart and then calculate postage options. You can also benefit from free UK postage on orders over £50. This free option is via a second class postage service.

At the moment, we have restricted postage to the UK only. If there's something you are desperate to order and you're in Europe or further afield, please drop us a line and we'll organise a postage estimate for you.
You didn't answer my question here...
Please contact us for further help and advice.
What fabric do you sell?
We sell quilting weight fabric, which is a medium weight fabric and used for traditional quilting, but also making clothes, light upholstery etc.
It isn't a heavyweight fabric and is not suitable for major upholstery projects, such as recovering furniture. Customers do make blinds and curtains, but please be aware that the fabric is not as wide as traditional curtain making fabric. It's also lighter weight and so you'll need a good lining.
All our fabric is great quality and 100% cotton.
What measurements can I buy your fabric in?
We offer various lengths of fabric, which we think is best described via the use of our Fabric Measurement Guide here. You can see the measurements for a fat quarter, half metre and metre cuts.
Most of our fabrics measure a maximum 112cm in width, which includes 2 selvedges either side, reducing the usable width to approximately 110cm. A few of our fabrics have slightly different measurements and if this is the case, they will clearly be identified in the item description.
If I order multiples of one fabric, will it come as one piece?
Absolutely and always! We're yet to find anyone who doesn't want their fabric in one piece, so we do this for all orders. If, for any reason, we are unable to do this, we will contact you as a matter of courtesy and ask how you'd like to proceed.
Do you offer swatches or samples?
We only offer samples of Kona Cotton Solids and Essex Linen. We are unable to offer swatches or samples of any other fabrics.
To order the Kona/Essex samples, please use this link and identify which colours you would like in a note at the checkout. You can order up to 10 samples.
What are the washing instructions for your fabrics?
Generally speaking, quilting weight fabrics should be machine washed on a cool temperature and tumble dried on a low setting.
Should I pre wash my fabric before using it?
Many quilters pre wash their fabrics to ensure any shrinkage is accounted for in the first wash. Additionally, some quilters like to pre wash to remove any residual chemicals from the printing process. It's an entirely personal decision though, some people do, some don't!
Do you offer discounts for large orders?
We do indeed! We start with free postage on orders over £50. Additionally, 10% off orders over £150 and 15% off orders over £250. We are not a wholesaler and therefore do not offer wholesale prices or trade accounts.
Use the following codes for your discounts:

Do you sell gift vouchers?
We don't currently have gift vouchers available for sale.
How do I pay?

Would you be prepared to donate fabric/money to my charity?
We do receive a lot of enquiries to assist with charity endeavours and fundraising. We would love to help you all, but as a small business, we can't help everyone. Please view our charity and fundraising page here to view some of the charities we have donated to/our own charitable endeavours.
I am a soft toy manufacturer, can you provide me with paperwork for my technical file?
