Kona Solids - Red, Orange & Yellow
Posted on 08 May 2017
Of all the colours in the Kona Cotton Solids shade card, there are less reds than anything else. This makes my life much easier! There are so many blues, for example, that colour matching is near impossible and you'd need a pantone colour reference to get the right tone.
Kona Cottons Solids come in (at the time of writing) 303 shades. From the blackest black to the crispest white, and everything in between. Slightly confusing can be the names. Kona is manufactured by Robert Kaufman, who also manufacture Essex Linen. Some of those names are used across both ranges... but don't necessarily look the same. And to make things a touch more confusing, Makower's 'Spectrum' range of solids also shares some of the same names. So, beware!
Back to Kona Cotton Solids. This is my supersize Kona chart.
The most popular shades of red are 'Tomato', 'Lipstick' and 'Poppy'. There is little difference between these three shades, so unless you're already using one of these colours in an existing project, they are interchangeable. I also sell a popular deeper shade called 'Wine' (seen in the image below on the right).
Oranges are equally simple. The lightest shade I offer is 'School Bus' which looks like an orangey yellow in the flesh. Then we have 'Orange' which does what it says on the tin and 'Carrot' is the brightest. I stock a lovely shade called 'Mango' which is a light sherbet coloured orange, completely different in tone to the others.
On the yellow front, there is a little more choice. The lightest I stock are 'Buttercup' and 'Banana'. 'Corn Yellow' is the most vibrant and possibly the most popular.
Whether you're looking for light or dark, Kona will have something for everyone. While we don't stock all the shades, we choose a wide range to ensure there's something for everyone. If you need some advice about colour matching, do get in touch.
